Water Programme:
Kilkenny County Council is responsible for the administration
of a number of grant and subsidy schemes which are aimed at
resourcing the Group Water and Sewerage sector in addition to
individual house owners who finance the supply of water from
their own resources.
1. Private Well Grants.
Small
Schemes Programme:
Small schemes are those schemes estimated to cost less than
€634,869. A grant of 75% is obtained from the Department
of the Environment and Local Government and the Council funds
the balance from its own resources. The total allocation for
2002 was €500,000. The schemes undertaken during the year
included:
• Clogh/Castlecomer Mains Replacement.
• Fencing of Treatment Works.
• Purcellsinch Sewerage Works (Improvement Works)
• Kilkenny (Mains Replacement)
• Urlingford/Johnstown Water Supply (Pumphouse Refurbishment)
• Castlecomer Sewerage Works (Improvement Works)
• Kilkenny Water Supply (Extension of Public Main)

Sludge Management Plan
The Sludge Management Plan was submitted to the Department and
is at present under consideration
Thomastown Sewerage Scheme
This scheme involved the provision of a new pumping station
and treatment works, refurbishment of an existing pumping station
and collection network and provision of new sewers and rising
mains. Construction was completed in 2002 and the plant is operational.
Graiguenamanagh Sewerage Scheme
This scheme involved the provision of two pumping stations,
a wastewater treatment works, upgrading of the town’s
sewerage system and surface water network. Construction was
completed in 2002 and the plant is operational.
Kilmacow Sewerage Scheme
A brief for the engagement of a Consulting Engineer was submitted
to the Department of the Environment and Local Government in
December 2002.
South Kilkenny water Supply Scheme(Belview Port)
A Preliminary Report was published in August 2002 and submitted
to the Department of the Environment and Local Government. The
Consultants have been requested to prepare the necessary documentation
for the Planning Process.
Kilkenny Water Conservation Project
An additional two full-time staff joined this project in September
2002. The average unaccounted for water was reduced from 41.22%
in 2001 to 30.70% in 2002.
