Press Release - Kilkenny County Council warns Boundary Change will result in additional costs to the public

Date: Monday 15th February 2016

Kilkenny County Council formally launched its submission to the Waterford Boundary Review at their monthly council meeting today Monday the 15th February. Speaking at the launch the Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Mary Hilda Cavanagh said "I must compliment all those involved in the drafting of the Kilkenny County Council submission. It is clear to see that a huge amount of work has gone into putting this detailed and comprehensive document together. There is a significant amount of evidence in this document that shows that there is no need for a boundary change. One of the most striking points made in this submission is that a boundary revision as proposed will result in additional costs for the public, either through increased costs to the people of Kilkenny or through the need for central government support to compensate Kilkenny for its loss. "

She added "Kilkenny County Council supports the development of County Kilkenny, Waterford City and the South East Region. The successful development of the South East Region will only be achieved through effective working relationships, co-ordination and partnership. A change to the county boundary is not required for Waterford and the region to reach full potential. This potential boundary change is divisive and it will not help the region."

Councillor Pat Dunphy, Chairman of the Municipal District of Piltown, said that "We have said all along that this process was not looked for by the people of Kilkenny or Waterford. This review is meant to take account of Effective Local Government and Putting People First. More than 19,000 Kilkenny people have said they do not want this. A change to the boundary as proposed will split communities and the people have said clearly that they do not want this either. Huge numbers of people in the area of interest have said that they do not want their identity changed. The committee and the minister must listen to the people. If there are any weaknesses in the current local authority arrangements or operations that need to be addressed, these can be addressed by having effective cooperation between the councils of Kilkenny and Waterford. It does not need a boundary change."
