'Step Beyond' exhibition by students of the Advanced Certificate in Art and Business at Ormonde College of Further Education

1st April - 5th May 2011
The Upstairs Gallery,Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny

Students pursuing the Advanced Certificate in Art and Business at Ormonde College of Further Education will be holding an exhibition of their artwork in the Upstairs Gallery of the Watergate Theatre in Kilkenny City from 1st April to 5th May 2011. The exhibition was officially opened by CLLR Martin Brett, Mayor of Kilkenny City, on Friday 1st April at 5pm. On display will be a selection of artworks created by the students and is a wonderful opportunity for the students themselves to get their work displayed in such a prestigious exhibition space in the city.

The Level 6 Advanced Certificate in Art and Business was introduced as a follow-on to the already existing and ever popular Level 5 Certificate in Fine Art (Portfolio Preparation) course in September of 2009. The course is uniquely designed to prepare student for life as professional artists. The modules include Drawing, Painting, Photography, Art Appreciation and, of course, Exhibition Organisation.

The organisation of the exhibition is the result of the students taking individual responsibilities for all the tasks necessary for a successful exhibition and then working as a team to complete them. The exhibition will display artwork created by the students that shows a wide variety of techniques and styles from traditional landscape to abstraction. Many of the students will be exhibiting their artwork for the first time.

The exhibition asks its audience to 'STEP BEYOND' and enjoy the experience of viewing the artwork of some of Kilkenny's newest artists emerging in 2011.

Ormonde College Exh Flyer 2011

The following is an idea of the variety of work on show at the exhibition:

Rebecca Hoyne: As an artist working in oils my main objectives are to express emotion, movement and life.

Doris Reinisch: I am hoping to draw the viewer into my own translation of images from real life through a visual experience of space, shapes, tones and texture.

Siobhan Coogan: In my work I try to unleash my imagination to explore the unknown of surreal fantasy.

Biddy Downey: I am an artist who is fascinated with colour, shape and form heading towards abstraction.

Matt Cullen: Do we reflect life or does life reflect us?

Darren Cleere: I am interested in capturing the calmness of still life through rich, vivid, acrylic colour.

Becky Belton: What I am concerned with is using a variety of unusual materials to create illusions evoking the underlying beauty of the human form.

Bob Brennan: Others are wasteful in their use of paint. I'm extravagant in its expenditure.

Marie Lee: I am interested in detailed work like portraiture as well as abstract art.

Aine Keegan: I have always worked in acrylic. When I discovered pop art I became excited about painting. I want to explore this genre to its full potential.

Caroline Kelleghan: Drawing on my creative experience I experiment with play, freedom, instinct and flow within the structure of knowledge.

Susan Cahill: My adult life has been spent working in the confines of an office environment. I am now free to explore the creative world of my imagination using surrealist techniques and the interpretation of the dream-like state.

Jaime Kavanagh: My work is primarily concerned with capturing emotion and form through the use of expressive, sometimes erratic, brush strokes.

Danielle Woods: I explore the memory of music from my childhood while drawing on Pop Art influences.
