County Kilkenny Severe Weather Coordination Group

key points emanating from a meeting of the County Kilkenny Severe Weather Coordination Group which convened Friday 17th December at 9.00a.m.

  • Roads in the county are generally satisfactory this morning but extreme care is required as lying snow and sub zero temperature will persist throughout the day. Noted that the M9 motorway near Knocktopher junction was closed for 2 hours due to a weather related single vehicle road crash. Motorway has reopened.
  • The advice from the South East Traffic Corps is that motorists should take to the roads only if necessary and if they are driving to do so with extreme caution.
  • The weather forecast for the days and week ahead indicate snowfall for Friday night and Saturday morning and sustained freezing temperatures ahead.
  • Group noted with concern the volume of salt stocks in hand in Kilkenny and the possibility of no further deliveries until the middle of next week. At the moment there are 275 tons in storage but this will need to be used and managed conservatively over the next 5 to 6 days. In this regard Kilkenny County Council will monitor its current winter service plan on a day by day basis and depending on the severity of the weather and daily demand for salt on roads changes may have to be made to the Council's daily gritting routine.
  • Plans for grit distribution to rural areas have been agreed with local IFA/IICMSA representatives. From today grit will be delivered to roughly 70 locations throughout the county and the details of these locations will shortly be posted on our website and notified to IFA/ICMSA .
  • Water supplies and reservoir storage levels in Kilkenny are operating without difficulty but mindful of the predicted plunge in temperatures householders are again reminded to use water conservatively and to make sure that some form of low heating is provided to attic storage tanks.
