Kilkenny Library Service lends a Picker to Support the National Spring Clean

The National Spring Clean is Ireland's most popular anti-litter initiative. Now in its 17th year, it takes place this April and encourages every sector of society to actively participate by conducting clean ups in their own local environment. To assist this year, a number of Kilkenny library branches are making it easier for everyone who wants to take part by lending out litter pick packs just like a book.

The library packs contain gloves, hi viz vests and litter pickers to supplement the An Taisce spring clean kit. Participating library branches are Urlingford, Castlecomer, Thomastown & Graiguenamanagh. Similar packs are available on a loan out basis from the Environment Section in County Hall and the Ferrybank Area Office. Before borrowing a pack from the library, National Spring Clean volunteers must register with An Taisce by ringing 01 400 2219 or online ( to receive their special national spring clean kit and more importantly insurance cover for the litter pick event.

Josephine Coyne, County Librarian said "Libraries have so much to offer to all of those engaged in environmental or community projects - whether it is space to meet, books, our IT and on line facilities, or lending litter pick packs. Kilkenny Library Service recognises the important role we play in protecting our environment and providing local support for community groups". Cllr Shortall, Chairman of the Environment Strategic Policy Committee launched the initiative in his local library in Castlecomer and praised the library service for assisting in the promotion the National Spring Clean in such a practical way.

Bernadette Moloney, the Environmental Awareness Officer commented at the launch that the Council has always been proactive in assisting groups that volunteer to keep their area litter free and like in previous years, bags of litter resulting from National Spring Clean events will be collected by the Council but prior notice must be given, she encourages groups to ring the Environment Section on 056-7794470 so the event is included on a collection schedule.
