Tips to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle your rubbish
Why don't you use the following tips to
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle your rubbish!

It has to be noted that the vast majority of Kilkenny people are very conscientious about what they do with their waste. They implement the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle policy not only in their homes, but in their schools, through the Green Schools programme and in their villages through the Tidy Towns initiative. Kilkenny County Council commends these people.
However in 2006 household waste generation increased by over 13% to more than 1.9 million tonnes. Almost 400,000 tonnes of this waste was recovered with the remainder being landfilled (EPA 2008 Ireland's Environment). So what can we do about it?
- Over 32% of your waste is Organic
This can be recycled by home composting. A home composter can be purchased through Kilkenny County Council at a subsidised rate of €30 or €15 if you are an O.A.P.
Did you know - Compost has the unique ability to improve the properties of soils and growing media physically (structurally), chemically (nutritionally), and biologically. Although many equate the benefit of compost use to lush green growth, caused by the plant-available nitrogen, the real benefits of using compost are long-term and related to its content of living-organic matter!
- Over 26% of your waste is Paper/Card
This can be put into your recycling bin or why not bring it to the Council's Recycling Centre at Dunmore and Newrath.
Did you know - 10,000 sheets of paper are used by each individual in an office of 1,000 people annually. Think of the saving for your pocket and the environment by switching to more electronic copies!
- Over 13% of your waste is Glass
Why don't you use your local Bottle Bank to recycle this valuable commodity?
There are over 40 Bottle Banks around the county.
Did you know - Recycling one glass jar saves enough energy to light a light bulb for 4 hours!
- Over 9% of your waste is Plastic
This again can be put into your recycling bin or brought to Dunmore Recycling Centre or Newrath
Did you know: If you lined up all the polystyrene foam cups made in just 1 day they would circle the earth & every plastic bag we throw away stays buried in the ground for up to 500 years before it finally breaks down.
- Over 2% of your waste is Cans.
This material can be put into your recycling bin, brought to Dunmore Recycling Centre or why not use 1 of the can banks around the county for FREE!
Did you know - Recycling one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a T.V. for 3 hours!
- Over 2% of your waste is Textiles.
Textiles can be donated to a local charity shop or brought to the Council's Clothes banks in Dunmore Recycling Centre..
Did you know - Textiles that are not used by charities are shredded into fibres & used to make new products, such as sound-deadening materials for the automotive industry, archival-quality paper, blankets and even plastic fencing!
- This only leaves you with 16% residual waste that will need to be landfilled. Kilkenny County Council urges you to use a waste collection service for the residual waste or alternatively bring your waste to the Dunmore Recycling Centre.
