WEEE, the Environment and the Customer

Since 2005 retailers are obliged to take back your Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) free of charge on a like for like basis when you purchase new appliances. Where goods are bought over the counter, retailers must take back the old product in store, either at the time of sale or within a maximum 15 days of the date of the sale, provided the customer can provide proof of purchase.

Where the new appliance is being delivered the seller of the product must take the old appliance back either on the delivery of the new product provided the old product has been cleaned and disconnected from any utilities and is ready for collection. Retailers must give 24 hours notice of a delivery or else return within 15 days to collect the old appliance. Alternatively the consumer can return the old appliance to the shop within a maximum of 30 days from the date of the delivery.

If you have old WEEE in your house you can deposit them free of charge at Dunmore Recycling Centre. WEEE Ireland in partnership with Kilkenny County Council hold regular WEEE collection days throughout the county. Special collection days are advertised in local press and on KCLR96FM. Should you have any queries in relation to WEEE, please contact Environment Section, Kilkenny County Council, 056-7794470 or environment@kilkennycoco.ie
