Abattoirs
The Veterinary Section provides Official Controls at 5 abattoirs in the city and county .These are approved to slaughter animals ( cattle , sheep and/or pigs )for human consumption .Generally the animals are sourced at local farms which reduces the transport stress to the animals .They supply their own butchers shop , other retailers , wholesalers and individuals for deep freeze purposes.
The following Official Controls are carried out at the abattoirs :
- Approval of abattoirs
- Ante and Post mortem inspections conducted by qualified veterinarians for each animal slaughtered
- Inspections and audits are carried out on operational hygiene , animal welfare , traceability, structures and waste disposal etc.
- Sampling as a verification of other controls , i.e. microbiological and residue sampling . The latter as part of the National Residue Control Plan .
In addition to the above Food Safety issues , animal welfare issues before and during the procedure of animal slaughter are inspected , audited and controlled which include:
The annual licensing of all Slaughter people in the local Authority Area i.e. anybody slaughtering animals must have an in date Slaughter License ( Both Local authority and DAF approved abattoirs ) under the Slaughter of Animals Act 1935
The inspection and auditing of the humane slaughter of animals in Abattoirs under the Protection of Animals at time of Slaughter Regulations 1995
