Joint Waste Management Plan for the South East Region 2006
Kilkenny County Council's Waste and Recycling Section
Kilkenny County Council has launched this section of its website to deal exclusively with waste and recycling information for householders, schools and companies. With the information provided here we hope to encourage everyone to do their bit for the environment by reducing, re-using and recycling as much waste as possible.
Kilkenny County Councils Dunmore landfill site closed in October 2009 as it reached its maximum capacity. Over 35,000 tonnes of waste was deposited at the landfill every year in Kilkenny, not including commercial and household waste that is landfilled in adjoining counties. Each household produces about 1 tonne of waste a year, enough to cover your house completely with full black sacks! About 1/3 of this waste is usually suitable for composting, and another 1/3 is suitable for recycling.
At the moment, some commercial and household waste is even being exported out of county Kilkenny. As part of the Joint Waste Management Plan for the South East Region, all six counties will be co-operating closely to ensure that the region has a good network of recycling and waste treatment infrastructure.
If we want to reduce the overall amount of waste going being created we will all have to make small differences to our lifestyles. Tips to achieve waste reduction are on www.wastenot.ie.
