Since 2010, the Kilkenny Field Name Recording Project has been collecting field names throughout the county of Kilkenny. Funded by Kilkenny County Council and the Heritage Council, and involving more than 80 local volunteers, the project has collected over 7,000 field names to date, across an area spanning 194 townlands.

Together these 7,000 names are a living record not just of the topography of the land, but of the families who farm and have farmed it, of the monuments that occupy it, of plants and animals that inhabit it, of local history and folklore and of the Irish language as it was spoken in this corner of the country. They are a testament to the deep connection between people and their place.

2016 marks two key milestones for the Kilkenny Field Name Recording Project. The first is the launch of a publication. Meitheal na bPáirceanna: The Kilkenny Field Name Recording Project, which can be downloaded at the link below, or obtained in hard copy from Kilkenny County Council Heritage Office.

The second is the online mapping and public availability of all of the field names collected to date. These have been mapped using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and can be viewed at the link below. Each field name recorded appears as a red dot on the map. Clicking on any red dot will display a summary of the record information held for that field.

Kilkenny County Council wishes to express thanks to all of the people and the communities involved in gathering the field names. Without them this project would not be possible.
