Parks and Recreation

The Parks Department was established to oversee the development and maintenance of recreational amenities in Kilkenny City and County. Since its establishment
a range of high quality recreational amenities including 24 playgrounds, parks, outdoor gyms and sports pitches have been provided. The department is also responsible for
on-going developments, visitor management and maintenance of Woodstock Gardens and Arboretum in Inistioge which has become a major tourist attraction in the south east.

The core services provided are:
- Playground development and maintenance - We currently have 24 playgrounds around the county

- These play facilities were developed in conjunction with local communities and many are also maintained with assistance from local communities and local FAS schemes.

- All playgrounds are inspected each week by our own in-house playground inspector for any potential safety issues and are also cleaned each week or more often, where required, to ensure they continue to be safe and clean to use for children.

- The Parks Section have developed and maintain a number of town and city parks which provide a range of facilities including footpaths, cycle ways, Multi Use Games Areas (MUGA) soccer pitches outdoor gyms etc. These parks are Garrincreen Neighbourhood Park, The Nore Linear Park, Pococke Neighbourhood Park, Bishops Demesne Neighbourhood Park, The Fair Green
Callan and Newpark Marsh Park.

- A bridge suspended beneath the existing Ossory Ring Road Bridge was installed to link the east and west banks of the Nore Linear Park south of Kilkenny City providing the final piece in a 4km long off road walking and cycling trail.

- A pitch licensing facility is being operated on a number of pitches in the city and environs. These pitches at Newpark Marsh Park, The Waterbarracks, Millennium Court, Larchfield and Garrincreen Neighbourhood Park are leased out to clubs for training and matches. A comprehensive summer maintenance scheme is implemented for each of the pitches to ensure the provision of top class playing surfaces.

- MUGA's (Multi Use Games Area) have been developed and are maintained regularly at The Fair Green Callan, Coan, Newpark Marsh Park, Bishops Demesne and Garrincreen Neighbourhood Parks. These facilities provide opportunities for year round play of a range of different sports and have proved extremely popular since their introduction.

- Outdoor Gyms are provided and maintained at five locations throughout the county allowing creating an opportunity for all to exercise and get fit in the open air and without having to attend a traditional gym.

- Repairs were organised and completed to a number of recreational resources throughout the county following recent storms and the Parks department was centrally involved in the cleanup operation including the reopening of transport arteries and the provision of technical advice on potentially dangerous trees and structures following the storms.
