Private Water Supplies
Public Note issued in accordance with EPA Drinking Water Advice Note No 12 Exempted Drinking Water Supplies
Kilkenny County Council routinely monitors the following water supplies for both bacteriological and chemical standards as laid down by the European Communities (Drinking Water) (No2) Regulations 2007 (Statutory Instrument 278/2007):
- All public supplies
- All private supplies supplying more than 10m3 per day (2220 gallons) and/or supplying more than 50 people
- Private supplies supplying less than the above if there is a commercial or public activity associated with the supply
Kilkenny County Council does not monitor other supplies (known as 'exempted' supplies as they are exempt from the regulations quoted above)
Persons on these exempted supplies (which are predominantly wells supplying private houses) should ensure that these sources are properly constructed and maintained so as to minimise any threat of pollution and consequent threat to health.
In order to minimise the possibility of contamination, Kilkenny County Council strongly recommends that consumers served by private supplies should
i. Find out about their supply,
ii. Keep the supply safe,
iii. Get the supply tested,
iv. Consider treating the supply,
v. Have the pipe work checked.
