Kilkenny’s First Home Composting Demonstration Site Has Been Officially Opened in Inistioge.

Home Composting Demonstration Site

The 20th of July was a busy day in Inistioge as graduates of the EPA Master Composting Course built the first Home Composting Demonstration Site in Kilkenny. The build was overseen by EPA Stop Food Waste Facilitator Betty Keogh and the majority of materials used were recycled materials.

Councillor Peter Cleere, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, officially opened the site and congratulated the 40 volunteers who had undertaken the Master Composter Training Programme. Councillor Cleere stated that the demonstration site was a testament to the drive of the Inistioge Tidy Towns Committee in moving forward on new environmental projects which benefit the community. He advised that the course was a great opportunity for the 40 graduates to share knowledge, learn new skills and build new friendships.

The programme, which is funded and facilitated by the Environmental Protection Agency Stop Food Waste Programme with support of Kilkenny County Council, took place over five weeks, and volunteers were trained in all aspects of food waste prevention and composting. The demonstration site is a green waste compost demonstration site and is managed and maintained by the Inistioge Tidy Towns Committee. The site demonstrates a 3 bay pallet turning system, a holding system, a leaf mould system and a wormery all of which are examples of achievable composting solutions that can be carried out at home or in schools.

Margaret Jernigan, Chairperson, Inistioge Tidy Towns, advised, "I feel privileged to be Chair of our wonderful Inistioge Tidy Towns. Everything we do is a team effort, from our volunteers, our CE workers, our council partners and our local businesses; we have an amazing team. This has all been very apparent in our recent Master Composter Course and building of Composter Site. We had over thirty keen people, all generations, from all the above-mentioned groups and representation form other Tidy Towns groups turn up early on Saturday morning and work hard all day completing the Composter build. It was an incredible day. A lot of learning, hard work, great team spirit and comradery and a lot of fun was had by everyone."
