Kilkenny has once again been deemed cleanest of 37 towns and cities surveyed by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).  It finished at the top of the table edging out Killarney, Ennis and Tullamore.

An Taisce, who conduct the surveys on behalf of IBAL, praised Kilkenny saying “There is surely a lesson in this result for other towns – while the majority of towns have deteriorated during Covid, Kilkenny has been maintained in pristine condition.  The High Street, River Nore Walk and grounds of Kilkenny Castle were all “excellent with regard to not just litter, but overall presentation.”

On hearing the result, Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Andrew McGuinness said “this is another fantastic performance for Kilkenny. These awards cannot be achieved without the ongoing investment of Kilkenny County Council in keeping Kilkenny City clean and litter free.  The result is also a huge tribute to the work of the Kilkenny City Area staff who work tirelessly everyday to ensure the citizens of Kilkenny City wake up every morning to a clean and litter free City.”

Kilkenny County Council’s Environment Section provides education and awareness to communities in relation to all environmental matters. The Council continues to have a zero-tolerance approach to illegal dumping in the interest of public health and to keep our City and County clean.  Members of the public are encouraged to play their part by reporting illegal dumping activity and they can do so by calling 1800 200 156.

Mayor of Kilkenny Municipal District, Cllr. John Coonan also expressed his delight on Kilkenny’s achievement stating “This is a wonderful achievement for Kilkenny City and I would like to acknowledge the contribution of voluntary groups in the City such as Keep Kilkenny Beautiful Committee and Kilkenny Sub Aqua who work annually with the Council to keep our roadways, streets and rivers clean and litter free.”
