River Nore “clean to European Norms”

The The Lacken Walk

The River Nore in Kilkenny City has achieved "clean to European Norms" status in the latest litter survey results for Coastal and Waterways sites, released this morning by Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL). The report states "This is an excellent site in terms of overall presentation and litter. There was a virtual absence of litter throughout the area surveyed and this was particularly good considering the high numbers of people. Evidence of cleaning at the time of survey."

This award is a tribute to the works undertaken on a daily basis along the River Nore by the Council's street cleaning staff, gardening staff and landscape maintenance staff. Senior Engineer, Simon Walton, says "It is appropriate that their efforts in presenting the River Nore walkways to a high standard is recognised and, in turn, both the local community and visitors to Kilkenny City derive great enjoyment from the riverside amenity. In addition, recent investments by Kilkenny County Council on riverside attractions such as the War Memorial and the Ossory Pedestrian Bridge ensure that the River Nore Linear Walk is a very prominent local amenity." The Council raises its focus on the River in the summer months by increased litter patrols and also collaborates with Keep Kilkenny Beautiful, Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club, Kilkenny Sub Aqua and Dragon Boats annually to extract rubbish that is out of reach from the riverbank. The work contributed by these voluntary Organisations to the presentation of the River and the use they make of the River as an amenity has greatly contributed to Kilkenny receiving this recognition from IBAL.

An Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr. Peter 'Chap' Cleere commented: "Awards such as this are the result of sheer hard work and commitment of the gardening and environmental staff of Kilkenny County Council working together with volunteers from local organisations. I would like to commend the efforts of all those who were instrumental in Kilkenny achieving this recognition as their combined efforts are an essential part of Kilkenny's success over the years."
