Minister Eoghan Murphy Visit 15022019

Kilkenny County Council as part of its ongoing housing delivery programme today welcomes the commencement of the construction of 33 houses at Donaguile, Castlecomer and the completion of 18 houses at Togher Way, Urlingford.

Minister for Housing, Deputy Eoghan Murphy, T.D., during a visit to a number of Kilkenny housing delivery sites on Friday, 15th February, 2019, turned the sod on the new development at Donaguile, Castlecomer and cut the ribbon to officially open the new development at Togher Way, Urlingford.

Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Cllr Eamon Aylward, speaking at Castlecomer welcomed Minister Murphy to turn the sod on another new housing project forming part of the Local Authority's Building Programme 2019. "The site at Castlecomer is one of 8 County Council housing construction projects either underway or to commence in 2019 all around the county, making local authority construction a significant part of our overall housing delivery programme."

Director of Services, Mary Mulholland, in outlining the ambitious building programme for housing delivery in Kilkenny indicated that the funding required for the delivery of the many schemes both underway and proposed in the county would exceed €70 million for the period 2018 to 2021. This represents a huge investment in Kilkenny and in housing, made possible through the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government commitment to the implementation of the Rebuilding Ireland Programme.

Minister Murphy also visited Togher Way , Urlingford to perform the official opening of 18 new housing units where he was welcomed by Cllr Michael McCarthy, Chairman of the Castlecomer Municipal District. This development marks the completion of previously derelict estate being brought into use for valuable social housing. Minister Murphy was joined in cutting the ribbon at Togher Way by new tenant Helene Power.

Kilkenny County Council exceeded its targets for housing delivery in 2018 working in partnership with the Voluntary Housing Sector and Developers to deliver more than 200 new homes for Kilkenny. A further 600 additional homes will be provided in the period 2019 to 2021 through Kilkenny County Council's Housing Delivery Programme. These will be delivered through projects already underway at Bolton, Callan, Main Street, Piltown, Walkin Street and Ballybough Street, Kilkenny, as well as those to commence during 2019 at Station Road, Ballyragget, Castlecomer Road, Kilkenny and Cois na Bearu, Graiguenamanagh. Welcoming Kilkenny's strong performance in housing delivery in 2018, Minister Murphy encouraged Kilkenny County Council and all those involved in housing delivery to be ambitious in their targets to maximise the impact of the Rebuilding Ireland Programme for those on our housing waiting lists who so badly need homes.
The Minister also visited the Respond Housing Association site at Ballybough Street, Kilkenny to review progress on site for the delivery of 54 new homes in the City which will be completed in 2019.

Kilkenny County Council very much welcomed Minister Murphy's visit to Kilkenny to view some of the many housing projects under way and look forward to working closely with the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government to successfully achieve housing solutions for those who need them in Kilkenny under the Rebuilding Ireland Programme.
