Removal of Re-Registration Provision for Septic Tanks

The Water Services Act 2007, as amended by the Water Services (Amendment) Act 2012, set out the requirement to re-register septic tanks after a five year period.

The policy in this area has been reviewed and it is no longer considered necessary to have a requirement for owners to re-register. Accordingly, the Minister has decided that the legal requirement to re-register should be removed from the statute books. This process is currently before the Houses of the Oireachtas and following enactment, registrations for septic tanks will remain valid indefinitely.

A relatively small number of people who originally registered their septic tanks in 2012 may look to re-register before the enactment of the legislation. Any such applicants should be advised that the removal of the legal requirement to re-register septic tanks every five years is imminent and there is no requirement now to re-register.

There is no re-registration facility on the www.protectourwater.ie website.
