1988 - 1989

The years 1988 and 1989 were busy years for the fire services in Kilkenny. On 26th December 1988 fire engines from Kilkenny, Castlecomer and Freshford fought a fire in a Ballyragget house in which 3 children lost their lives.

In early 1989 Station Officer Jack Kennedy retired after 42 years in the service.

Also that year Kilkenny City Fire Service bought a Toyota high-ace van and a Hino Water Carrier. This water-carrier, or tanker as it is known to the firemen, can carry 1800 gallons of water and is used at large or small fires where the water supply is short. It has a 300 gpm pump. It also has a monitor mounted on the back.
