Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Pilot Project - Kilkenny Garda Sioch

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Pilot Project will be launched in both Kilkenny and Blanchardstown Garda Siochána district on the 3rd March 2006.

Backed by the Health Service Executive, members of Garda Siochána will be trained in the use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED). The Garda Siochána patrol cars operating in and around Castlecomer, Ballyragget, Callan and Freshford will be carrying Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

This will assist suspected cardiac victims, before an ambulance arrives, using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) - a device which gives an electric shock to try to get the heart back to normal rhythm.

Heart disease is a big killer in Ireland, with the majority of cases frequently occurring outside the hospital setting and predominately in the home. Evidence shows that the sooner defibrillation occurs after the individual collapses, the greater the chance of survival.
