Kilkenny Local Authorities Sign Partnership Agreement to Map Efficient Future to 2020

Kilkenny Local Authorities have completed the signing of the Energy Map partnership with The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) on Friday 01st February 2013.

Present at the signing were County Manager Joe Crockett and Directors of Service John Mulholland and Philip O'Neill representing Kilkenny Local Authorities, Dr. Brian Motherway, CEO and Alan Ryan Manager-Public Sector of SEAI and Paddy Phelan, Manager of the Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency (CKEA).

The public sector has been challenged to reach verifiable energy-efficiency savings of 33% by 2020. This target requires management commitment at the highest level and the involvement of all employees.

The public sector target is challenging, but reaching it is essential for our economy, our environment and the country. Every year Ireland spends almost €6 billion on imported energy, with the public sector accounting for more than €500 million per annum.

In signing this agreement Kilkenny Local Authorities are committed to reducing their energy consumption by delivering low energy public services to the people of the county. This will not only reduce the bottom line cost of delivered services but also make those services more sustainable into the future by insulating the local authority from rising cost of energy.

By achieving 33% verifiable savings by 2020 the local authority will implement the ISO 50001 approved energy map programme internally to daily service provision. Aiming to reduce energy consumption through energy efficiency is at the core of the Carlow Kilkenny Energy Agency's mission since 2002. The CKEA will support Kilkenny Local Authorities in achieving this target in partnership with SEAI by mentoring best practice in the field of energy demand reduction.
