Video - Reduce Your Use Campaign - Thomastown & Callan Area Office.
This video documents Kilkenny County Council's 2024 Reduce Your Use Campaign with a focus on measures taken to reduce emissions in both the Thomastown and Callan Area Offices.
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a replacement fuel for diesel, made from recycled vegetable oil. It can reduce emissions by up 90%! Kilkenny County Council operates over 250 vehicles for roadworks, and other services such as the Fire Service, Civil Defence, Mobile Library and Parks Department. Together they produce over 25% of the Council’s greenhouse gas emissions. Many of these vehicles are large machines, and current technology isn’t suitable to replace them with electric alternatives. HVO is an interim solution until more sustainable technologies are found, with trials presently ongoing. In October 2023, Kilkenny County Council commenced a trial using HVO in a number of council vehicles and if the trial is successful, HVO could play a huge role in reducing the Council’s greenhouse gas emissions. This video gives an overview of our experiences to date.

Kilkenny’s climate is changing and this poses risks for people living in the county. Kilkenny County Council is taking action to address climate change. Our vision is that we will be a climate resilient organisation that inspires and supports the county’s transition to a biodiversity rich, sustainable and climate neutral economy by 2050. Community Climate Action Programme Grant Video
Kilkenny County Council was delighted to have welcomed the announcement by the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, of a new Community Climate Action Programme. The overall objective of the Community Climate Action Programme is to support and empower communities to take climate action and to shape and build low carbon, sustainable communities. The 2023 grant is now closed but it is envisaged that this will be an annual grant, we will you can check out details about the grant in the video here.
