Kilkenny Projects to be funded through Heritage Stewardship Fund 2023

Heritage-Grant

The Heritage Council has today announced the projects to be funded this year under its Heritage Stewardship Fund, a new scheme that supports staff in local authorities, public bodies, state agencies and third level educational institutes working on heritage programmes.

A total of €500,000 in funding was approved for 24 for organisations nationwide.

Kilkenny County Council received €30,000 from this scheme. We will work in partnership with  the Heritage Council and  property owners and will produce a laser scan, photogrammetry record and interpretation of upstanding historic structures and masonry elements on Parliament Street, Kilkenny.

This funding  of €30,000 will support a deeper understanding of these medieval and early modern structures in Parliament Kilkenny and follows on from previous works delivered by Kilkenny County Council on the medieval fabric in the City in recent years: repair of Talbot’s Tower, installation of interpretive signs at Talbot’s Tower and St. James Gate, the refurbishing of St. Mary’s Church to a new museum use as the Medieval Mile Museum and the upgrading of public surfaces in the city to highlight the original line of the city wall.

Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council Cllr. Pat Fitzpatrick stated that

“The funding assigned for this project will allow for a detailed record of these nationally significant buildings in Kilkenny City. The funding from the Heritage Council is most welcome and we look forward to working with the Heritage Council and property owners in a collaborative way to deliver this heritage project in Kilkenny”.

Interim Chief Executive Sean McKeown commented:

“We are delighted to receive this funding under the Heritage Stewardship Fund.  This scheme will support us to document and record many historic structures in our medieval City.  Kilkenny County Council will organise an event to promote the work done during National Heritage Week, between the 12th and 20th of August 2023.”
