Kilkenny Fire and Rescue Service in conjunction with Coillte Teo ran a successful 3-day Advanced Chainsaw Operators Course in November 2007.


Firefighters from all of the Fire Brigades in Kilkenny Fire and Rescue Authority successfully passed the 3-day Advanced Chainsaw Course. The course involved both classroom lectures and practical use of chainsaws in a local forest.


The objectives of the course were as follows:

  • Participants to learn to perform the following skills with an emphasis on safety
  • Process individual windblown tress
  • Assessing windblown trees and deciding on the appropriate technique
  • Cutting windblown trees using correct techniques
  • Site Safety
  • Cross cutting under tension and compression
  • Removal of hazardous limbs
  • Dealing with dangerously hung-up trees
  • Regulations and safety requirements relevant to windblown tress
  • Cross cutting
  • Split-level cuts
  • Taking down hung up trees
  • General chainsaw maintenance
  • Chain sharpening
  • Carburettor tuning
